Survey respondents were asked to report the primary, secondary and tertiary genres in which they worked.  The survey included a drop down list with over 20 options, but respondents were also allowed to type in an answer. The chart above shows the most popular, choices stacked together by genre.



Primary genre

Focusing on the primary genres, the most frequent responses were classical, jazz, rock/alt-rock, pop, and composer. But many, many genres were represented in the survey.  not only in the lists but also in respondents’ typed-in answers, which ran from Musical Theatre to Yiddish.

On the survey, we asked respondents to allocate their gross music-related income earned in the past 12 months amongst eight possible buckets. Income from: (1) composing/songwriting, (2) sound recordings, (3) performances, shows, concerts, (4) being a salaried player, (5) being a session player or freelancer — in the studio or on the road, (6) merchandise/brand, (7) teaching or (8) other.

The chart above shows the aggregated results of this allocation, both for all respondents (N=5371), as well as five core genres. Read more about revenue types
